The Sociedad Historica de Montecristi, Inc. (SHMC) is a
Dominican non-profit membership corporation founded in 1997 and governed
Board of Directors. Spencer B. Meredith, Chairman and President, has
been in charge of the project since its inception, working closely with
the Montecristi community and members of the Dominican Government.
1963, Meredith had been hired by the Dominican Government to assist in
the evaluation of marine resources on the Northwest coast of the
country. The survey determined that the Montecristi area had the
greatest potential for the development of commercial fishing. Since that

In 1997, Meredith founded
the non-profit Sociedad Historica de Montecristi, Inc. with the
assistance of Professor Jose M. Cruxent, who was then co-director of
the archeological excavations at La Isabela. La Isabela is where
Columbus established his first settlement on his second voyage to
Hispaniola. The settlement was unsuccessful for several reasons and was
abandoned after a few years, but it proved to be a major source of
archaeological material, both native Taino and Spanish colonists.
decision to build a
public museum in Montecristi resulted from field work done with
Professor Cruxent in the unexplored coastal hills of Montecristi
Province, not far from La Isabela.
